Resumen de La recuperación del patrimonio monumental en Cuba

Isabel Rigol Savio

  • Heritage conservation in Cuba appears during the first decades of the Twentieth Century. Thanks to the intervention of an intellectual minority and few patrons, some important monuments were restored. At the same time, valuable buildings are lost under the official indifference or the common Modern trends from the Centurys second half. In the fifties the Master Plan for Havana would have spoiled the values of the City´s Historic Core, today a World Heritage site. After 1959 new entities started to restore relevant landmarks. New protective laws were approved and skilled personnel was trained. Since the eighties huge efforts have been developed in Old Havana, Trinidad, Camagüey and Santiago de Cuba. Old Havanas innovative and successful model of management could be applied to other historic towns.

Concepts have been broadened according to the national and the international experience.

But, indeed, a huge patrimony facing material scarcities means a great challenge.
