Resumen de La dimensión arqueológica del Centro Histórico de La Habana: una propuesta integral desde la Arqueología preventiva

Alicia Castillo Mena, Sonia Menéndez Castro

  • Developing procedures for the administration and protection of cities with renowned historic significance is the strategy for the refurbishment of Havana´s historic center. Such procedures would foster integral rehabilitation. Within the frame of the said strategy, archaeology has contributed to understand the city´s development.

The city has been regarded as a complex site, the understanding of which helps comprehending the urban historic landscape. However, it is obvious that the very nature of changes inherent in inhabited spaces and renovation go against the knowledge and preservation of archaeological values. Integral forms of work are required so that they are properly valued, on behalf of their study and inclusion within the city´s renovation plans. A model of preventive archaeology which will cover several areas within archaeological heritage management would be shown together with measures for other values and urban and cultural resources as part of an effort to expand archaeological knowledge within society.
