This article is the result of work matured over nearly twenty years of experience as a teacher and researcher of SFL and it can help to focus the teaching of one of the most complex skills that are at the initial stages, the oral one, consisting in communicating with someone who does not speak our language and making that person interact with us. The paper begins with a brief overview of the linguistic theory on which we rely, and then we explain which goals they have to achieve, what obstacles we must overcome to achieve, which strategies have been put into play, what activities are going to be carried out in class, and finally, how to evaluate the teaching-learning process. This has always been covered by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
