The city of Jaen being away from the usual mutes, was visited by just a handful of british "romantic" travellers. The Northem way passed through Bailen and headed west towards Seville; that of the Eastem coast reached Granada; and those who arrived in Gibraltar went on a "pilgrimage to the meccas" of Ronda and again Granada. Yet in the Alhambra Library there exist works by travellers whose inquisitiveness led them during the first half of the 19th century to take paths and visit places that were "out of the rut".
