THE illegal transport of animals is currently the only way by which lumpy skin disease (LSD) and peste des petits ruminants (PPR) could enter the European Union (EU), according to two scientific opinions from the Animal Health and Welfare (AHAW) panel of the European Food Safety Authority.
Both opinions, which were published on January 13, note that the risk of either disease entering the EU would depend on its prevalence in the country of origin and the number of animals moved illegally.
