    • IN response to the letter from Ian Nanjiani and others on recognised veterinary practice (RVP) in the context of clinical trials (VR, May 23, 2015, vol 176, p 552), the issue is not simply the interpretation of RVP.

      EU Directive 2010/63/EU provides separate exemptions from the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA) for non-experimental clinical veterinary practices and for veterinary clinical trials required for the marketing authorisation of a veterinary medicinal product.

      They are not the same exemption and, therefore, are subject to different considerations.

      The exemption for non-experimental clinical veterinary practice has been transposed into ASPA and is essentially the same as the provision it replaced, namely RVP. The RCVS advises on the interpretation of RVP and we have interpreted …
