THE biennial report of the Pig Health and Welfare Council (PHWC) was launched in the House of Commons on July 16. The council brings together a range of industry and government stakeholders involved in pig health or welfare activities or policy development. Its report discusses progress made over the past two years and highlights the targets set for each of the council's subgroups, which cover antimicrobials, pig meat safety, welfare and surveillance.
Jim Scudamore, chairman of the PHWC, stressed the importance of collaboration within the pig industry and between the industry and government. ‘Much of the surveillance subgroup's work in the past year has been devoted to porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED). Development of the PED contingency plan for England, the standard operating procedures and diagnostic tests has required close collaboration across the pig industry, with considerable assistance from the APHA and government,’ he said.
