Los principales conjuntos epigráficos desde la Edad Media se han conservado en las catedrales. Sus testimonios estaban destinados a conservar el recuerdo de personas y acontecimientos relacionados con la catedral, y por ello su estudio nos puede proporcionar importantes informaciones sobre su historia. Se puede tomar como ejemplo para conocer cómo es un conjunto epigráfico de este tipo el que encontramos en la catedral de Cuenca. Es un conjunto complejo y variado, dado el largo periodo de tiempo en el que se ha ido conformando (desde el siglo XIII al XX). Hay testimonios muy diversos en lo que se refiere a materiales, técnicas y funciones. Como en todos los conjuntos epigráficos, en el de la Catedral de Cuenca predominan las inscripciones funerarias, dada la costumbre de enterrar en las iglesias vigente en España hasta comienzos del siglo XIX, pero hay también inscripciones destinadas a rememorar otros hechos importantes en la actividad del edificio y en la vida de la ciudad, como la fundación y dedicación de capillas, la renovación de estructuras arquitectónicas, fenómenos sobrenaturales como la curación de epidemias por intervención de algún santo, la explicación de conjuntos iconográficos, etc.

The main epigraphic collection from the Middle Ages have been conserved in the cathedrals. Their testimonies were destined to conserve the memory of people and events connected with the cathedral, and for that reason its study can provide important information about its history. We found an example to know how is an epigraphic collection of this type that of the cathedral of Cuenca. It is a complex and varied collection, given the long period of time in which it has been shaped (XIII-XX centuries). There are diverse testimonies as regards their materials, techniques and functions. Like in all the epigraphic collection, in that of de cathedral of Cuenca the funeral inscriptions are majority, given the custom to bury in the churches effective in Spain until beginnings of XIX century, but there are too inscriptions destined to recall other important facts in the activity of the building and of the life of the city, like the foundation and dedication of chapels, the renovation of architectonic structures, supernatural phenomena like the treatment of epidemics by intervention of some holy, the explanation of iconographic collections, etc.
