The article discusses the U.S.'s relations with the Middle East, contending that the U.S. involvement in the region under U.S. President Barack Obama should increase beyond counterterrorism methods to nation building, or state-building, measures. An overview of the U.S.'s efforts against the terrorist organizations Al Qaeda and Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), including ISIS's involvement in the Syrian Civil War, is provided.
