This article explains the intervention of conservation-restoration in the image of El Cristo de Ánimas de Ciegos, which belongs to the Hermandad Sacramental y Reales Cofradías Fusionadas de Málaga. The work is made of carved polychrome wood and shows a crucified Christ. It has undergone several restorations and modifications, five instances of which were documented. All of these took place in the 20th century, in 1913, 1931, 1939, 1952 and 1968.In the research and conservation-restoration project undertaken by the Instituto Andaluz del Patrimonio Histórico, one was able to differentiate between the various re-polychroming procedures the image had undergone during its existence. The polychrome surface, a result of its latest restoration (carried out in 1968), was chromatically altered, thus preventing one from being able to give a suitable aesthetic interpretation of the image. The possibility of recovering the image’s oldest polychrome, of high technical and aesthetic quality, was also confirmed. The recovery of the oldest polychrome stratum of the carving has allowed it to reveal its highest historical, artistic, aesthetic and cultural values. This also showcases the work and paves the way for studying new hypotheses related to its existence, which open new lines of research regarding this image.
