    • he articles listed under Theme 10 of the commentary “The Literature That Shaped Modern Periodontology” (see J Periodontol 2014;85:3-9) focus on two kinds of mucogingival defects—insufficient dimension of (attached) gingiva and soft tissue recessions—and represent different stages of our knowledge and practice in the field of mucogingival therapy.

Back in the 1950s, the importance of maintaining an adequate zone of attached gingiva was emphasized in the surgical treatment of periodontal disease.1,2 During the following decade a number of surgical techniques, not only for the preservation but also for the increase of the gingival dimension as part of periodontal treatment, were described in the periodontal literature. As was common at that time, clinical observations and experience primarily formed the basis for the decision as to the need for an adequate width of gingiva. Not surprisingly, what was to be considered as an adequate gingival dimension varied among clinicians and authors.
