Resumen de Matteo da Milano prima del Messale Arcimboldi. Il Breviario ambrosiano di Modesto Cusani

Cristina Romano

  • Matteo da Milano before the Arcimboldi Missal: the Ambrosian Breviary belonging to Modesto Cusani.

This paper analyzes one specimen of the Ambrosian Breviary edited by Pietro Casola that was printed in Milan by Zarotto in 1490, and decorated by Matteo da Milano. The specimen, Inc. 2025, is currently kept at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan. In all probability, it used to belong to Modesto Cusani. The incunabulum is an important element in the oeuvre of Matteo da Milano that allows us to deepen our knowledge of his youthful years and identify the presence of an important assistant during this early phase of his carrer. Furthermore, thanks to the identification of his new client Modesto Cusani, this "Cusani Breviary" also allows us to broaden the context within which Matteo da Milano worked. Thie paper clarifies to a greater extent than before Matteo's relationships with the court of the Sforza family and with the artists it employed.
