Science qualifications for 16-year-olds in England are currently being reformed.
This article reports on a study that sought the views of two stakeholder groups on the purpose and structure of science qualifications for 16-year-olds: teachers, and employers of 16-year-old school-leavers. There was considerable overlap in the priorities of employers and teachers. Both groups felt that developing subject content knowledge was important, while skills associated with scientific literacy were also considered to be a priority. There was support for the continued availability of a combined science option, despite some reservations about its suitability for progression to further study.
