Simbol's immediate focus is the proposed Imperial Valley plant in southern California. Once Simbol begins processing operations, it will slash the time and cost needed to extract lithium from brine, according to Simbol's CEO, Luka Erceg.
Simbol's process technology involves taking cooled lithium brine together with steam, carbon dioxide and water, and applying patented technology to extract dissolved solids; recover, separate and refine lithium (and manganese and zinc) compounds; and return the spent brine to an energy generator for reinjection.
"What the market fails to recognise is that lithium is not a smile and dial product. You don't wake up one day, place a phone call and say:'I've got 10,0000 tonnes of lithium carbonate to sell, would you like to buy it?' It's a complex material transaction."
