Student mobility in low quality schools: Segmentation among the most vulnerable students

    El estudio aborda el fenómeno de 10 permanencia por largos años de escuelas (urbanas) con bajo desempeño, medido a través del SEMCE. En Ellas analiza El flujo o movimiento de estudiantes hacia otros establecimientos de igual o mejor realidad. Encontramos que casi el 90% de los estudiantes que asisten a colegios de bajo desempeño educativo permanecen en ellos. De los estudiantes que se mueven, casi 30% se van a un establecimiento con igual o peor desempeño educativo. Los estudiantes eon mayor probabilidad de moverse hacia mejores escuelas (mayor calidad) son estudiantes de mayores recursos económicos y capitales culturales o con mejor desempeño académico, dando cuenta así de un fenómeno de segmentación entre los estudiantes más vulnerabes.

    This study Addresses the phenomenon of permanenee for long years of low performanee (urban) sehools, measured by SIMCE. We Also analyze mobility of students to other sehools of same or better quality. The results show that student's mobility rates in these sehools is almost 11%. Almost 30% of the stu-dents who ehange sehools go to a sehool of the same or worse quality. Students with greater probabilities of ehanging to better performanee (higher quality) sehools are those pertaining to groups with greater eeonomie resourees and eultural eapital or better aeademie performanee, whieh eould aeeountfor strong segmentation that exists in the Chilean edueational system.
