El oficio de facilitador del tránsito irregular de migrantes que buscaban empleo en Estados Unidos surgió a finales del siglo XIX, debido al paso de una política migratoria liberal a otra restrictiva. Las redes de apoyo para el tránsito irregular de migrantes constituyen una pieza cada vez más importante del sistema migratorio México-estadunidense. El reforzamiento del control fronterizo y el acecho de los grupos delictivos mexicanos sobre los migrantes hacen que éstos dependan de los agentes facilitadores del cruce fronterizo; sin embargo, existe un desconocimiento de este oficio. Este artículo, fundamentado en una metodología cualitativa que incluye la realización, entre abril de 2008 y julio de 2012, de entrevistas en profundidad a un centenar de agentes facilitadores del cruce fronterizo mexicanos, examina el proceso de aprendizaje de este oficio y describe las circunstancias conducentes al ejercicio de esta actividad.

The profession of smuggler of migrants looking for employment in the United States started at the end of the XIXth century because of the change from a liberal to a restrictive immigration policy. Migrant smugglers are an increasingly important piece of the Mexican-American migratory system. Stringent border control policies and the stalking of migrants by Mexican criminal groups have made migrants dependents of smugglers; however, there is a lack of knowledge of this profession. This paper, based on a qualitative methodology that includes in-depth interviews with one hundred Mexican migrant smugglers, conducted between april 2008 and july 2012, examines the learning process of this profession and describes the circumstances that have conducted them to this activity.
