Resumen de Riesgos a la salud y al medio ambiente en las políticas de nanotecnología en América Latina

Las nanotecnologías han crecido y se expandieron en América Latina durante la primera década del siglo xxi. El presente artículo muestra el papel que las políticas de ciencia y tecnología impulsadas por instituciones como el Banco Mundial y la Organización de Estados Americanos han jugado al promover determinados objetivos, pero también el riesgo de no acompañar dichos objetivos con criterios básicos de implementación.
Así, al no incorporar los potenciales riesgos a la salud y al medio ambiente y demás efectos laborales se omitieron aspectos de relevancia para trabajadores y consumidores, lo que aleja a las políticas públicas de la sociedad civil organizada.

Nanotechnologies grew and expanded in Latin America during the first decade of the twenty-first century. This article shows the role that science and technology policies fostered by institutions like the World Bank and the Organization of American States have played in promoting certain objectives, but also the risk of not accompanying those objectives with basic criteria for implementation. Since potential health and environmental risks or other labor effects were not included, aspects that are important for both workers and consumers have been omitted from these policies, opening a gap between them and those proposed by organized civil society.
