    El problema fundamental que se plantea este artículo consiste en mostrar el papel que jugó el clivaje urbano rural en los procesos electorales que tuvieron lugar entre 1991 y el año 2000 en México, con base algunas herramientas teóricas del análisis comparado sobre partidos y elecciones, referidas en particular a los factores que influyen en los procesos electorales, se analiza el cambio en el sistema de partidos durante la transición democrática y se plantea como interrogante si las elecciones del 2000 representaron un realineamiento electoral.

    This work deals fundamentally with the study of federal elections from 1991 to 2000, looking specifically at the role of the cleavage between city and countryside in the transformation of the party system that happened during this period. Naturally, it takes into account the political context from the 1970s on and, above all, the transition that accompanied this electoral change. The author analyzes the process of electoral misalignment in the light of the changes in the territorial distribution of the vote and the impact this had on the system of a hegemonic party.
