Resumen de Un mondo in movimento

Gian Carlo Blangiardo

  • Demographic projections stress the increasing gap in population growth in LDCs (Less/Least Developed Countries) versus MDCs (More/Most Developed Countries). In the latter, the prospects of decreasing populations and aging are likely to negatively affect their welfare. In the next decades, old Europe and young Africa will increasingly be required to seek a common strategy to solve the problems of a demographic change that, on the one hand, has gone far beyond the mythical goal of zero growth, and, on the other hand, has triggered a phase of rapid population growth destined to continue for at least another half century. Statistics suggest that any automatic payoff between demographic deficit and surplus in the respective regions is unlikely. In order to effect positive global change, international migration from the South to the North must be transformed from the traditional “safety valve” into a “driver of development” through projects of circular migration involving the accumulation of knowledge, experience, and financial resources that are transferred to foster development in migrants’ native countries.
