A new method is proposed in which the enthalpy change derived from the complexation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) with a metal is calculated using a newly developed laser deflection calorimeter. The deflection signal observed after the complexation reaction is qualitatively compared with the deflection signal observed after the addition of small amounts of water at higher and lower temperatures than the environment. Thermochemical concepts behind the enthalpy change are clearly demonstrated. The deflection signal is calibrated using the HCl/NaOH neutralization reaction and the enthalpy change related to the magnesium and cadmium complexation with EDTA is calculated.
