  • Resumen
    • The rail companies who use an information system to organise traffic have taken a step towards putting their resources to the best use. The main aims behind these management programmes are: a reduction in staff, a better use of the services available and increase in the competitive aspect of train travel with regard to other transport systems. The results obtained can be analysed at three levels: operative, availability aspect and informative according to whether what is being studied is manoeuvre and operation of trains or distribution of carriages and passengers or everything related to the relay of information between rail centres, and rail information to the public.

The Belgian and Dutch railways are given as examples of these systems of computerising work. In Belgium a network of small computers solve any problems that might arise, in Holland all the answers are put out by just one very large computer which receives all the data. The projected results are obvious, but the prime one is an increased percentage of time that carriages are in circulation with regard to goods delivery and station stopping times. In this fashion a substantial annual saving is brought about in salaries and material. Another projected result is the mechanisation of seat reservations throughout Europe in a unified manner among all the rail companies. The success obtained in the cybernetic island in Hannover would lead one to believe that this computerised information constitutes a real step towards a more rational use of railways.
