The publication describes the supporting system for data collection in automatic operation (SARD) and its applications to rail transport. This system differs from the typical A.T.S. in that it can be adapted to installations actually in use and can act like an A.T.S on any automatic operation system that might be installed at a future date. The different parts comprising the system and their interrelation are shown.
The publication also describes how the SARD system complies with the safety and reliability demands in the widest extension as related to railways and shows how in case of failure the less safe elements would not cause serious drawbacks to operation.
