    Cuando se promueve la difusión de un elemento patrimonial, se profundiza generalmente en su pasado y en los distintos momentos que han configurado su historia. Sin embargo, se suelen ignorar las actuaciones realizadas hasta adecuarlo para su aprovechamiento público o turístico, actuaciones que en ocasiones procuran devolver el bien a un “estado original”, pero que suponen una nueva alteración. Este artículo pretende reflexionar sobre los cambios que se producen como consecuencia de este nuevo uso, uso que debería ser considerado como una nueva fase en la vida del elemento patrimonial.

    Para ello realizaremos un breve recorrido sobre un ejemplo concreto, el castillo situado en Alcaudete (Jaén), desde sus orígenes islámicos pasando por el dominio calatravo, la transformación en palacio y su posterior abandono, finalizando con las recientes tareas de restauración e interpretación, las cuales lo han transformado en una herramienta del presente para el conocimiento de su pasado.

    When a heritage site is institutionally promoted, emphasis is usually laid on its past, on the events that have shaped its history. However, the actions undertaken to adapt the site for public or tourist use tend to be ignored, even when they attempt to restore it to its “original condition”, often introducing changes in the process. This work aims to enquire into the changes resulting from these new uses of a site, insofar as they imply a new period in its existence. In order to illustrate this process, we will survey the evolution of one particular case, the Castle of Alcaudete (Jaén, Spain). We will describe its islamic origins, the changes suffered under the rule of the Order of Calatrava, its transformation into a palace, its subsequent neglect and abandonment and, finally, the recent interpretive restoration work that has been performed on the site and which has transformed it into a modern instrument for interpreting the past.
