The meaning of the adjective afforosi, a hapax referred to the Jews of Rome in an anonymous Roman chronicle from the 14th century, is far from clear. Since afforosi is preceded by affaccennati and followed by affociti, both meaning ‘busy, hectic’, one is led to interpret it as a synonym of the other two adjectives. However, the only etymon that has been proposed, i.e.
Gothic *aifrs ‘disgust’, points to a different meaning, that is to say ‘horrid, dreadful’, which is theoretically possible but does not suit the context.
Nevertheless, the problem can be solved by considering afforosi as derived from the popular outcomes of Latin fŭria, that in Central Italy are often found with the meaning of ‘haste, hurry’. This hypothesis is phonologically plausible and makes it possible to attribute to afforosi the meaning ‘hectic’, which is the only one that is appropriate in the context.

L’aggettivo afforosi è un hapax della Cronica dell’Anonimo romano (XIV sec.) il cui significato è oscuro: il termine occorre infatti in riferimento agli ebrei romani in una terna aggettivale con affaccennati e affociti ‘indaffarati’ e parrebbe un sinonimo degli altri due vocaboli con il valore di ‘solerti’;
l’unico etimo proposto, però, muove dal gotico *aifrs ‘ribrezzo’ e comporta pertanto che s’interpreti l’aggettivo come ‘orrendi, spaventosi’, il che non è implausibile in sé, ma mal si adatta al contesto. Tuttavia, il problema può essere risolto riconducendo afforosi alla famiglia lessicale dei derivati dal lat. fŭria, una voce che nei dialetti dell’Italia centrale ha assunto non di rado il significato di ‘fretta, smania’: questa ipotesi non ha impedimenti formali e consente di attribuire all’aggettivo il valore di ‘solerti, frenetici’, che è quello richiesto dal contesto.
