Like numerous scientific discoveries, quarks were postulated before their discovery could be proven experimentally. Indeed, several researchers had predicted the existence of those elementary particles but it is the American Murray Gell-Mann of the Technology Institute of California that named them after a poem from James Joyce – “Three Quarks for Mr Marks” – the word quark has thus no real ethymological meaning.
