  • The "Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles" (RENFE) is experimenting with the possibilities of slab track in order to achieve higher average speeds. There exist several types of slab track with which good results have been obtained in tests and experiments.

    One of the most important points are the physical characteristics of the elements that are integrated in slab track and the previous considerations on the calculation of the latter. The advantages and inconveniences that accompany this system are also borne in mind, as well as the economic aspects of its costs and rentability. On the other hand the similar experiences of other countries serve as a contrast to the Spanish accomplishment.

    With the object of obtaining a personal experience and at the same time of selecting the most suitable type of track structure, an experimental stretch of 4.1 km has been constructed, with the continuous slab system, BR type. The behavior of the track is studied in view of: dynamic force on curved and straight track; different types of platform, such an embankment, soft ground and rocks; also on isolated hard points, flagstones of canals and decks of bridges; turnouts; station; thermic forces originated by strong climatic variations.

    Also the experimental program includes: control of fissures; behavior of the slab in the front of climatic changes; quality of platform; laboratory tests; static and dynamic tests "in situ"; measurements of the geometry of the track; confirmation of the theoretical model.
