For the electric insulation of high tension installations, organic of inorganic materials can be used. Amongst the former can be mentioned the synthetic products, and amongst the latter, porcelain and glass.
Insulations by synthetic products have mechanical properties superior to those of inorganic materials such as: tenacity, resistance to traction and flexure, resistance to impact, they are of little weight and are easy to manufacture.
The most modern synthetic insulating products are the so-called stratified ones: paper, cotton fibre or fibre glass, agglomerate with synthetic resins.
All of these synthetic insulators have a very good mechanic resistance and only a few present problems in insulating currents in damp or contaminated atmospheres.
In all types of insulation exist the problems of its mechanical resistance, its insulating power and its easy substitution in case of breakage or deterioration as well as the costs, which should be as low as possible.
Great advances have been made in all these fields, but new possibilities are being continually attempted, in search of a general improvement of the type of insulation.
