Resumen de Le croci di Borromini per la dedicazione della basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano: (18 novembre 1626)

Assunta Di Sante

  • Francesco Borromini probably moved to Rome in 1619. There he worked for around ten years at the Fabric of St. Peter in the Vatican. In the beginning, this work was directed by Carlo Maderno, until his death; then he was replaced by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This article is about two works of Borromini. Not only are they linked together, but additionally one of them has been forgotten about for a long time. Borromini was commissioned for the decoration of Porta Santa for the Jubilee in 1625. On that occasion, Borromini designed and created two inlaid marble crosses. The drawings are stored at Albertina in Vienna. The following year (1626), for the consecration of the Basilica, Borromini engraved twelve carved crosses laid down on pillars. These crosses probably owe their inspiration to the one previously done by Borromini himself, especially in terms of shape and decorative pattern. The crosses were then decorated with mosaic by Giovanni Battista Calandra.
