  • The author reflects on the work of journalist Donna Gaines in 1987 when she reported on the social conditions of young people in Bergenfield, New Jersey after four teenagers asphyxiated themselves in a suicide pact. It notes the relationships Gaines developed with the subjects of her study, which became the book "Teenage Wasteland: Suburbia's Dead End Kids." The author goes on to compare Gaines' work to her own study of Juggalos, a subculture of fans of the the music group Insane Clown Posse (ICP).
