The article discusses the work of Ted Scambos, a glaciologist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center. He and his colleagues are trying to determine why the volume of ice in Antarctica is increasing even as the Arctic sea ice continues to melt. Nevertheless, studies have suggested that the Amundsen Sea ice sheet will eventually collapse and possibly result in a significant rise in sea levels around the globe. Accompanying the text are photographs of equipment Scambos uses in his work including a measuring tape, a laptop computer, and a avalanche shovel, along with comments from Scambos on each.
