  • The article reports on the radioactive contamination in Apollo, Pennsylvania where the nuclear company Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation (NUMEC) operated during the Cold War. Topics discussed include an overview of the plutonium production and nuclear disposal operations of NUMEC in the area from 1960 to 1970 and the controversy over the disappearance of large amounts of highly-enriched, weapons-grade uranium from NUMEC in the 1960s. Also discussed is the threat posed by the radioactive contamination to the town.
