This article revises our understanding of the identity and later life of the important 16th-century Spanish canon, Diego López de Ayala. A variety of primary sources from multiple archives help clarify the canon's true lineage and his preoccupations with personal and family legacy, jeopardized by political and financial turmoil at Toledo Cathedral.The article also presents the first published transcription of this important figure's last will and testament. Despite the canon's attempts to secure his personal legacy for generations to come, the cathedral debts for which he and his heirs were held responsible eroded both his wealth and his reputatio
