  • There exist nowadays more than 5000 km railway tunnels all over the world. Many of them were built more than a century ago with obsolete technics.

    Supervision and maintenance of these tunnels is essential for the economy of every country. To this purpose an elec-optic measuring system has been developed. This system is supplied with a very complete hard and software equipment, a TV, camera with a high resolution power, and a quick computer for data processing. It is intended to be mounted on a vehicle. Its purpose is the obtention of recordings for profiles and deformation inside the tunnel, both as field recording or with permanent data recording, always meant as help in maintenance works.

    From the state of deformation observed, and with help of the infrared spectrum of the tunnel and the surrounding ground, mechanical stresses can be obtained, by means of the boundary elements method.
