• This paper discusses the elicitation process of geological knowledge for an expert system in a very imperfected domain: petroleum exploration. GEOXPERT project was developed since 1985 as co-operation between Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and the research center of Petroleo do Brasil S.A. (CENPES- PETROBRAS). GEOXPERT systems intended to provide consultational advice on both identification and classification of an specific geological environment. Factual and heuristic knowledge was provided by a sedimentary geologist considered the expert in sedimentary environment on Brazil, in an empirical process added by a prototype system, meeting and field works. The experiment and after studies resulted in a set of acquisition and representation techniques. Elicitation techniques include bibliographic review, structured and non-structured interview an semantic analysis.
