    Studies on the senses began to flourish in the humanities and social sciences in the 19th century, opportunely perhaps in the colonial era with its image of the noble savage and the resurgence of Classical humanist ideas, as a way of reflecting on the sensory organs and sensations seen as both linking and differentiating people and cultures. Philosophical reflections were followed by anthropological, psychological, ethnological, sociological and historical approaches. All of these perspectives went far beyond the classic debate on the moral hierarchy of the senses, in attempts to develop a language of the senses by scientific means. This tipping point in sensory studies sheds new light on the construction of the humanities and social sciences, but also offers a panoramic view over initiatives that are still seen as marginal or fragmented in the light of the enthusiasm for sensory studies.

    Au xixe siècle, les études sensorielles se développent dans le champ des sciences humaines et sociales. L’époque semble opportune dans la diffusion coloniale du bon sauvage, comme dans la résurgence de la culture humaniste antique pour se questionner sur les organes sensoriels et les sensations, traits d’unions comme de différenciation des hommes et des cultures. Aux entreprises philosophiques vont succéder les approches anthropologiques, psychologiques, ethnologiques, sociologiques et historiques. Chacune de ces perspectives dépasse le débat classique sur la hiérarchie sensorielle selon des règles morales, pour tenter d’élaborer scientifiquement un langage des sens. Ce point de bascule sensoriel donne un éclairage neuf sur la constitution des disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales, mais propose également une vue panoramique sur des initiatives considérées encore comme marginales ou éclatées au regard de l’engouement pour les sensory studies.
