    This article questions the idyllic image of the coexistence of the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish cultures in medieval Spain. The author considers the very idea of coexistence as deriving from a utopian and acritical concept of tolerance created in the 17th century. Violence and conflict within each of those three cultures were the key factors in misunderstanding the other . Religious intransigence and radicalism on the part of some spiritual leaders and communities were the main obstacle for coexistence.

    Real and psychological violence generated a trauma that impeded a peaceful or neutral coexistence.

La violencia en el seno de cada una de las culturas en conflicto fue el fact or determinante que provocó el cortocircuito en la comprensión del otro. La intransigencia religiosa y el radicalismo de importantes líderes religiosos y sectores sociales fueron el primer obstáculo a la convivencia. El trauma generado por la violencia real y mental dificultó la posibilidad de una coexistencia neutra o pacífica.
