    Compliance archaeology has been introduced very recently at Reunion Island. The mechanical survey conducted at Saint-Denis, within the perimeter of the former prison Juliette Dodu, represents one of the first archaeological investigations in order to assure the continuity of this public service in the Indian Ocean, but also to show the importance of archaeology for local material culture and history. The function of this penitentiary site has not changed since the 18th century; the excavation revealed the presence of the buried walls and walking surfaces of the first geôle (jail) as well as numerous other stone constructions still unidentified. Although many technical problems were encountered when working within the former prison walls, this fieldwork demonstrated the scientific and patrimonial potential of this urban place, witch will be excavated extensively before the final renovation. Knowing that the history of Reunion Island only covers modern and contemporary times, the inhabitants are in strong need of information concerning their past which archaeology could provide for.

    L’archéologie préventive est une discipline toute nouvelle à La Réunion. Le diagnostic mené à Saint-Denis, dans l'enceinte de l'ancienne prison Juliette Dodu, est l'une des premières opérations à assurer la continuité de ce service public dans l'océan Indien, et à démontrer l'intérêt de la discipline pour y faire progresser la connaissance du passé. Sur un site à la fonction inchangée depuis le XVIIIe siècle, les sondages ont notamment permis de retrouver les vestiges enfouis, murs arasés et niveaux de sols, d'une des premières geôles, et d'autres structures encore indéterminées. Surmontant les contraintes techniques liées à l'espace carcéral, cette recherche de terrain a apporté une démonstration scientifique du potentiel patrimonial de cet îlot urbain, dont la rénovation sera accompagnée d'une fouille préventive. Si l'histoire de l'île ne couvre que les périodes moderne et contemporaine, ses habitants ont aujourd'hui un fort besoin de mémoire, auquel vient contribuer l'archéologie.
