Dans cet exposé, consacré une discussion sur les modes de domination et les luttes de classes en Angleterre au XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècle principalement, E.P Thompson reprend les résultats de ses travaux sur la formation de la classe ouvrière et de travaux plus récents sur les luttes de clas ses au XVIIIe siècle. Il montre comment, pour construire une histoire marxiste de la domination de classe en Angleterre, il faut remettre en question divers schèmes ou pré-supposés associés à la tradition historiographique marxiste et forgés propos de l'histoire française : représentation des transformations des modes de domination sur le modèle des révolutions brutales (modèle cataclysmique); représentation d'une opposition radicale sans interpénétration entre aristocratie et bourgeoisie; representation des modes de domination sur le modèle de imposition hégémonique de la domination. Il propose des ana lyses de la mise en scène de la domination de la gentry et de la contre-violence de la terreur populaire.

Formen der Herrschaft und Revolution in England. In diesem Exposé über eine Diskussion über die Herrschaftsmechanismen und Klasenkämpfe in England im 18. und zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts greift E. P. Thompson auf die Ergebnisse seiner Arbeiten über die Klassenkämpfe im 18. Jahrhundert zurück. Er zeigt, dass man verschiedene Schemen und Annahmen der marxistischen historiographischen Tradition, die in der Analyse der französischen Geschichte herausgeformt wurden, in Frage stellen muss, wenn man eine marxi stische Geschichte der Klassenherrschaft in England erstellen will. Und zwar die Vorstellung von der Verän derung der Herrschaftsformen nach einem Modell bru taler Revolutionen (Umsturzmodel) ; die Vorstellung einer radikalen Gegnerschaft ohne gegenseitige Durchdringung zwischen der Aristokratie und der Bourgeoisie die Vorstellung von Herrschaftsformen nach dem Modell einer hegemonischen Herrschaftsausübung. Modes of domination and revolutions in England. In his discussion of modes of domination and class conflict in England, mainly in the eighteenth century and at the beginning of the nineteenth, E.P. Thompson reviews the result of his own works on the formation of the working class and of more recent studies of class struggles in the eighteenth century. He shows that in order to create a Marxist history of class domination in England, it is necessary to reexamine the various schemes and presuppositions associated with the Marxist historiographical tradition and developed in conjunction with the study of French history. These schemes consist in analyzing transformations in the modes of domination on the model of violent revolution (cataclysmic model); conceiving of a radical opposition, wholly lacking in interpenetration, between the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie; and depicting the modes of domination on the model of the throughgoing imposition of a full-scale hegemony. The author investigates the workings of the domination imposed by the gentry and of the counter-violence offered by popular terror.
