    The Iberian Question has been inspiring dreams, desires, repressions and ghosts in Portugal and Spain ever since Portugal achieved independence.

    The temporary loss of independence in 1580 and subsequent restoration in 1640 made the confrontation and gauging of specific identity issues possible, natural or not, and also incited anti-Castilian sentiments which have persisted. Almeida Garrett crossed these feelings with the ghosts of unification and produced a theory, at a time of civil war between liberals and absolutists (1828-1834), with the aim of analysing Portugal’s role in Europe via an alternative constructed under the supposition of a hierarchy between values of liberty and independence, the former prevailing: either independence with liberty or union with Spain.

    Desde a independência do reino de Portugal que a questão ibérica foi alimentando em Portugal e Espanha, sonhos, desejos, recalcamentos e fantasmas. A perda temporária da independência portuguesa em 1580 e a sua restauração em 1640 permitiu confrontar e aferir situações de especificidades identitárias, naturais ou não, e também acicatar em Portugal sentimentos de anti castelhanismo que foram perdurando.

    Almeida Garrett cruzou estes sentimentos com os fantasmas da união e produziu teoria, em tempos de guerra civil entre liberais e absolutistas (1828-1834), no sentido de equacionar o papel de Portugal na balança da Europa à luz de uma alternativa construída sob o pressuposto de uma hierarquia entre os valores liberdade e independência, com prevalência da primeira: ou independência com liberdade ou união com Espanha.
