    Les statuts sont la forme de production de normes la plus répandue et la plus caractéristique de l'Italie communale des XIIe-XVe siècles. De la coutume au statut il y a une discontinuité importante, culturelle plutôt que juridique, et surtout politique. Il y eut une autre discontinuité entre les statuts et le droit commun universitaire qui s'affirma à partir du XIIIe siècle, puisque ce dernier compléta et conditionna le droit statutaire, conférant au juriste un primat qui est ensuite resté traditionnel en Italie.

    Forms of Law in Communal Italy : The Statutes - The statutes were the most prevalent and characteristic form of production of legal standards in communal Italy in the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. From custom to statute, a notable discontinuity may be observed, cultural rather than juridical, but above all political. There was yet another discontinuity between the statutes and the common law taught in the university, which asserted itself from the thirteenth century on, endowing the jurist with a primacy which was to remain traditional in Italy.
