The author stresses the uniqueness of the pyrennean family, found at the very heart of regions dominated by the stem family. Attachment to the « home » détermines patterns of inheritance (primogeniture) and marriage and the status of younger children condamned to celibary, subordination and misery. He concludes with the progressive decline of this System under the démographie growth of the 17th and 18th centuries. But the favored position of the oldest child survived, thanks to ingenious adaptations, until the middle of the 19th century among the comfortable persantry.

L'auteur souligne l'originalité de la famille pyrénéenne, au cœur même des régions qui connaissent la famille-souche. L'attachement à la « maison » détermine les coutumes d'héritage (l'aîné hérite seul), de mariage ; le statut des cadets, condamnés au célibat, à la subordination, à la misère. Il conclut sur la remise en cause progressive du système sous la poussée démographique aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Mais le droit d'aînesse survit, grâce à d'habiles formules, jusqu'au milieu du XIXe siècle chez les ruraux nantis.
