A three-part inorganic chemistry experiment in macromolecular self-assembly is described. Part A is the synthesis of [CuX(Bpy)] and [(CuX)2(Bpy)] (X is Cl, Br, I; Bpy is 4,4'-dipyridyl) by self-assembly of CuX and Bpy in acetonitrile. Part B is a semiquantitative study of the equilibrium between [CuX(Bpy)] and [(CuX)2(Bpy)] through visual observation of charge transfer colors. Part C is the determination of copper content in the products through the use of photometry or atomic absorption spectroscopy.
