Un site gallo-romain alpin: Gilly (Savoie)

    During the Gallo-Roman age, the Isère valley used to be one of the three main roads across the Alps, now it is known for its numerous ancient remains. In Gilly, after ten years of excavations we discovered parts of an unknown vicus next to an ancient portorium formaly located in Albertville. It is made of several buildings apparently scattered around the countryside and sheltered from torrents : — a medium sized villa (quite completely dug out) : its peristyle square plan and two mosaïcs seem to have an italic style, and to be the presumed center of an agricultural estate with its typical remains, — around there, several larger buildings were discovered thanks to drillings : under the village of Gilly, a villa and a group of buildings; near the river, an interesting site where we identified a square planned wall, the fana and the concave portico of a sanctuary and a possible rural theater. This vicus had surely some relationship with a fluvial and road trade and we still have to look for the extension and functions of the tollgate of Ad Publicanos.

    La vallée de l'Isère, empruntée à l'époque gallo-romaine par un des trois grands itinéraires routiers transalpins, est connue par de nombreuses découvertes antiques. A Gilly, après dix ans de fouilles,vient d'être partiellement mis au jour un vicus encore inconnu et proche du portorium jusque là localisé à Albertville. Il se compose de constructions apparemment dispersées dans un terroir agricole et à l'abri des eaux; — une villa d'importance moyenne, fouillée presque exhaustivement : plan carré à péristyle, deux mosaïques en place y sembleraient d'origine italique et le centre présumé d'un domaine rural au mobilier typé, — à quelque distance, plusieurs ensembles de constructions plus considérables, reconnus par sondages : sous le village de Gilly une villa et des édifices groupés et, près de la rivière, un ensemble plus curieux; on y a identifié l'enceinte carrée, les fana, le portique concave, d'un sanctuaire et d'un théâtre rural éventuel. Lié sans nul doute au commerce routier et fluvial, ce vicus amène à reconsidérer, non le site, mais l'extension et les fonctions du poste péager d'Ad Publicanos.
