    The evidence provided by medical inspectors who, around 1883, were put in charge of the Protection of Young Infants, explains the reasons which led parents to en trust their children to "bottle-feeding" nurses (or dry-nurses) whereas "artificial" methods of feeding were considered dangerous. On the one hand, in the northern half of the country, child-minders used to refuse to breast-feed any child other than their own. Moreover, in the same area, opting for bottle-feeding represented a means for the parents of progressively breaking away from the traditional form of sending their child out to a nurse.

    Le témoignage des médecins-inspecteurs, chargés vers 1883 de la Protection des Enfants du premier âge, éclaire les raisons qui ont conduit les parents à confier leurs enfants à des nourrices « au biberon », alors même que l'allaitement « artificiel » était jugé dangereux. D'une part, dans la moitié nord du pays, les nourrices ont refusé d'allaiter un autre enfant que le leur. Par ailleurs, dans la même région, l'adoption du biberon a représenté pour les parents un moyen de s'affranchir progressivement de la forme traditionnelle de l'envoi en nourrice.
