The visceral nature of the pícaro’s life in "Lazarillo de Tormes" is clearly seen in the first tratado, the account of Lazarillo’s time with his blind master, along with the necessity of properly functioning senses for survival.This article looks specifically at the episode of the sausage for its portrayal of the powerful role of smell among the other senses.The author proposes that the olfactory’s unique function in this portion of the narrative questions the accepted superiority of sight, implying the need for greater individual awareness in an uncertain world.
