Resumen de HIV/AIDS: Gaining Ground and Forging Forward

Jeanette M. Smith

  • The physician and scientist Galen (born in the second century) endeavored to consider all possible implications when pondering a problem. “Reason,” he wrote, “finds the answers most quickly, but experience confirms our confidence in them.”1 In this spirit, the goal of novel interventions to eliminate or permanently suppress HIV reservoirs had been advanced in 2010 by Folkers and Fauci.2 In a Viewpoint in this issue of JAMA, Fauci and colleagues3 discuss the goals of viral eradication and sustained virologic remission and suggest that “Each goal is being pursued in early-stage research and some evidence of feasibility has been established, albeit under special and relatively unique circumstances.” Galen would no doubt find the scientific process represented in this JAMA HIV/AIDS theme issue affirming and encouraging.
