    Se describen los principios de la resonancia magnética nuclear como procedimiento diagnóstico de reciente introducción en Medicina, así como su empleo específico a nivel de la articulación témporomandibular. Esta técnica resulta especialmente útil en pacientes con disfunción de la articulación, ya que proporciona información acerca de las estructuras óseas y estructuras blandas implicadas (menisco articular, ligamentos articulares). En un futuro, la resonancia magnética nuclear podría desplazar a la tomografía computarizada (TAC) y artrografía, por su inocuidad y alta resolución de las imágenes.

    The principles of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging of the temporomadibular joint are described. Magnetic resonance imaging is especially useful in patients with dysfunctional disorders of the temporomandibular joint, because it allows the production of high-quality diagnostic images of the soft-tissue anatomy of the temporomadibular joint, including the meniscus with its anterior and posterior attachments. In the future this technique has the potential to replace artography and computed tomography in diagnosing internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint.
