    L'oppidum de Constantine est situé près de Lançon-de- Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône) et domine l'étang de Berre. Après avoir replacé le site dans une perspective chronologique, l'auteur — officier d'artillerie — décrit et analyse l'enceinte qui ceinture cet habitat; il étudie de manière plus particulière la valeur militaire des structures en les mettant en parallèle d'une part avec les contraintes liées au terrain et d'autre part avec les possibilités de l'armement de l'époque. Au « tout militaire » caractéristique de l'archéologie des oppida du siècle dernier a succédé une approche « civile » tout aussi excessive dans ses développements. Cet article reprend donc l'étude d'une enceinte en tenant compte de sa fonction défensive.

    The Constantine oppidum is located near Lançon-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône) and towers above the Berre pond. The author — an artillery officer — first draws a chronological perspective of the site, and then describes and analyzes the wall surrounding this dwelling place; he studies more particularly the military significance of the structures by comparing them to firstly, the restrainsts pertaining to the terrain, and secondly, the possibilities of the arms of the time. After privileging the sole military aspect of the oppida, which was the archeological trend of the last century, a new urban approach succeeded, which was as excessive in its demonstrations. This article sheds a new light on the surrounding wall, by taking into account its role of defense.
