    In the present state of our knowlege it is dangerous to try to characterize the Alpine glaciations according to the presence of mammalian fossils. The geomorphology and the nature of the paleolosols appear to indicate that the sands and gravels of Châtillon- Saint-Jean are older than the Rissian outwash plains of the lower valley of the Isère. As we have suggested in our thesis, these sands and gravels may belong to a very early stage of the Riss glaciation or, more probably, to the end of the Mindel period.

    Dans l'état actuel de nos connaissances, il est osé de vouloir caractériser les glaciations alpines d'après les faunes de mammifères. La morphologie et les paléosols semblent indiquer que la nappe alluviale de Châtillon Saint-Jean est antérieure aux cônes fluvio-glaciaires rissiens de la basse vallée de l'Isère ; comme nous l'avions suggéré dans notre thèse, cette nappe alluviale pourrait appartenir à un Riss très ancien ou, plus probablement, à un Mindel final.
