  There is an ongoing debate between the defenders of phonocentrism and those who see writing autonomous. It is examined from an ontological and phylogenetic point of view to that extent writing is primary a visual semiotic system, that is drawing. From this point of view, we propose a notion of semasiogram, non verbal, non figurative grapheme, whose semantics depends on interpretation.

  Intervenant dans le débat auquel se livrent les tenants du phonocentrisme et ceux de l'autonomie de l'écriture, nous tentons d'examiner, dans une double perspective onto- et phylogénétique, en quoi l'écriture est d'abord un système sémiotique visuel : du dessin. Cette perspective nous amène à concevoir le sémasiogramme, graphème non verbal, non figuratif, dont la sémantique relève du travail de l'interprétation.
